on perspective

i spent last evening looking for eggs
in nooks and crannies
garden and porch
irritated that these girls
won't lay in their boxes
incensed,
i disturbed their sleep at 5:00
this morning
to photograph them on their roosts
so i could show you
these unruly hens....
but perspective visited at 1:36
when i admired a student's necklace
i like your necklace
she fingered it, looked down
and whispered
it has my sister's remains in it
and the hen's eggs
don't matter
at
all

on looking up

Spartan Baseball 5.13.08 136

you were standing under the lights
along the fence
at the baseball game last night
wearing a carrhart coat
to keep out the biting cold
you stood behind the other guys
and i wondered what was
on your mind
two years ago
i saw you sitting on your
bed playing video games
not looking up
not wanting to see anything real
it was four days after
your kid brother
sat in my first period,
reading a hardy boys mystery
and it was two days after
he died
you were standing under the lights
along the fence
at the baseball game last night
and i hope you're
looking
up

what's left

Water pump in Paoua
9:32 pm and what's left is
ironing, rinsing the sink,
saying goodnight
but i don't move
from my corner of the couch
laptop perched on my
crisscross applesauce legs
because
i want to say something
wise
maybe profound
but
the screen stays white
while i absently braid a strand of hair
and finally
what i have to say is
i. am. thankful.
for
husband advertising free wood
on the local swap shop
and then delivering all day
for
students raising money
to provide clean water
for those without
for
my girl, the one i mentor,
she's smiling these days
10:37 pm
and what's left is
and what's always left is
praise
who am i
and what is my family
that you have
brought me this far?

looking up on thursday

i climbed
(i am afraid of heights)
from the bottom

i climbed
(i am afraid of failure)
from the bottom
to the top

i climbed
(i am afraid of falling)
from the bottom
to the top
while my students
cheered me on
