how crying will make me a biblical mom. really.

dear sons,

it's august now and
you're both freshmen
and
i want to give you a
be-sure-to-brush-your-teeth-every-day
kind of list
but you probably have it memorized
so you get an old testament story instead
it's those israelites,
they've been freed from an exile
by cyrus, king of persia
and ezra's author writes that they
made a beginning
i love that,
made a beginning
it's certain and hopeful, you know?
a foundation for god's house,
that's what the israelites were building,
and they began
after two years of prayer and sacrifice and worship
and they began
in accordance with god's commands
and
i want you to make beginnings like that,
certain
hopeful
god-centered
and when you've made those beginnings
i'll do what god's children did,
sing and praise
he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever
but, ummmmm,
there's also a pretty big chance of crying, too
when i leave you at the university, hank
when i send you off to high school, jack
the elders in ezra chapter three did
they wept for what had passed
so really, if when i cry
i'm biblical a biblical mom
boom

how about you? making any beginnings in your life? do tell.

  1. Ah, yes! "Made a beginning" - how perfect. We are making a beginning right now. We just moved into a new house, I'm back to a part time working schedule and we are basically making the beginning of the next phase of our life. It's a good, daunting, wonderful thing. May involve a few tears, too :)

  2. Powerful, Kendal. I love the way you wove the Story into your story. I've been thinking about biblical motherhood lately... My baby is beginning first grade. That's a big beginning for me right now.

  4. Mmm, Kendal, this is beautiful. And it makes me cry thinking about my baby turning ONE in a matter of weeks. Oh, the time...bring it back, bring it back.

  5. The words sank into my heart, Kendra. The beginning of wedding planning, yet my heart I'm feeling like it's the ending of day-by-day mothering. Happy/sad feelings.

  6. :) I'm glad to know that I'm a Biblical kind of mom too.

  7. Dear Kendall
Crying is part and parcel of motherhood; goes with the territory sort of. Yes, dear one, we cry when our children suffer and then find it difficult to believe that Gold loves us even more than we love our children, being the perfect parent and all. Talking about being inconsistent....!
    Blessings XX

  8. Oh how I love this. I too was a Biblical Mom on the first day of first grade this week.

  9. I hear you. Just sent my daughter back to college. It's not easy when you make beginnings. But they're good. And yes, biblical. :-)

  10. Oh - yes - new beginnings. No tears yet. The 3rd son graduate h.s. but will be going to college in January. I have a high school freshman and a 7th grader left in the nest -and we changed schools this year - they're in a Latin Classical school - both taking the same beginning Latin classes, learning math by process and repetition - not by teaching to a state test, they're reading classics and not pop lit - and we are all so excited. No tears yet - I'd like a year or two without:)
