psalm 103 trees (where i feel smallest)

i've been suffering some first-world problems lately...
the water heater not working
and
one of the dogs chewing a new hose
into
nine
pieces
and
the stinkbug infestation continuing
and
poison ivy conquering my arm. my leg.
but
there's a spot along my driveway,
between the
graveyard
and
the dropping-off-place,
with trees so towering i think of them as
psalm 103 trees
for they whisper
my insignificance
and
god's everlastingness.
standing there is
humiliating and grand all at once
and
praise the lord, my soul!

where is your psalm 103, the place where perspective come barreling in?

people all around me are giving up
(for lent)
and i can't even accomplish
my february ninth to-do list
i'm not even sure why i wrote
recipe at the bottom
(and starred it)....
i'm afraid the stacks on my desks at school
and the dust bunnies at home
have joined forces and
are threatening a bloody coup....
today is valentine's day
so i'll have a classroom-full of
giddy, broken-hearted, sugared teenagers
and i kind of dread it, really....
i'm just feeling under
or i was feeling under until i watched this sixty-one-second video....

on perspective

i spent last evening looking for eggs
in nooks and crannies
garden and porch
irritated that these girls
won't lay in their boxes
incensed,
i disturbed their sleep at 5:00
this morning
to photograph them on their roosts
so i could show you
these unruly hens....
but perspective visited at 1:36
when i admired a student's necklace
i like your necklace
she fingered it, looked down
and whispered
it has my sister's remains in it
and the hen's eggs
don't matter
at
all
