all three of my readers might wonder how i have time to read enough to post a list since i'm a teacher and a mom. ummmmm. escapism. when life gets stressful, i tend to dwell on the negative, but when i'm reading, i'm not thinking negative thoughts. so....i've read some awesome (at least to me) books since school started. i've categorized and starred them - five stars is the very best, and four reached that rank!

****Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
****Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins
****Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins
Historical Fiction
*****Before we were Free (Dominican Republic) – Julia Alvarez
****Rooftops of Tehran (Iran) – Mahbod Seraji
Memoir
*****Left to Tell (Rwanda) – Immaculee Ilibagiza
***** A Long Way Gone (Sierra Leone) – Ishmael Abeah
*****Persopolis (Iran) - Marjane Satrapi
***Of Beetles and Angels (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan) – Mawi Asgedom
**Soldier Girl (Uganda) - Faith J. H. McDonnell and Grace Akallo
I wish my "escapism" activities were as knowledge-filled, productive, and as entertaining as yours. I don't get much of any of those benefits with my escape route.....which is straight to bed and straight to zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
ReplyDeletethank you so so so much for that list.

K,
ReplyDeleteI hear you. When I'm mad at my husband, frustrated with the kids, or just want to check out, I read.
Now, since you are the only person I know that has read Hunger Games, we must talk-
1. Holy cow, I love this book.
2. Are the others really as good? I mean come on!
3. Don't books like this (Brave New World, Far. 451, the Giver, and such) make you obsess a little about what our future might look like?
great list, friend! and thank you, for speaking your support of my book. love to you. xo
ReplyDeleteA Long Way Gone is perhaps one of my most favorite, ever. Also, The Art of Racing In The Rain... love. Currently reading Bling, A Thousand Splendid Suns (for a couple of months), and PoemCrazy... umm... ADD full blown. ;o
ReplyDeletekendall, i'm so happy to find another obsessed reader in the blog world! i just pulled out two of my all-time favorites to re-read:
ReplyDeleteThings Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
The Women Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
