you're my girl

i mentor a young lady who battles anorexia. she comes to church with me these days, and as the pastor spoke about relationships today, i couldn't help but look to my right. she sat, cross-legged, sketching a tree in her journal. and i wrote for her:

red dress
white polka dots
and
elephant bracelet
you sit beside me
at church
and
i want to hug you
i want to ask you how you are, really
i want to take away your fear
i want to instill in you a hope that perseveres
i want
i want
i want
you're my girl
and
i love you, chick

and for these i am thankful:

336. quiet
337. unbroken by lauren hillenbrand
338. sweet potatoes from the garden
339. yellow flowers in brown bottles
340. husband. he knows me.
341. seeing sisters at soccer games and brother at football
342. pound cake. even if it falls apart.

  1. So beautiful. It's wonderful how you love her Kendal. One day she will truly understand how your have given your heart. <3 It seems so appropriate she was drawing a tree for some reason. I also have no doubt...she knows YOU love HER.

(I am about to start listening to Unbroken... it sounds fascinating...so glad you are enjoying it!)

  3. there is just some upspoken connection when people have traveled a similar road. Others that have not can't "really" understand..
how one is farther up ahead..one not quite as far and it is divine when their eyes meet. and the upspoken happens.

  13. I felt the tension here--the wanting to do something, the wanting to bring the healing, all while watching and waiting for the Great Physician. So thankful you are there with her, bearing witness to the reality that there is healing.

  19. You are so beautiful. Your heart precious. Someday your girl will say, "I'm really all right." Your heart does the reaching now, but hers will surprise you someday.
