bring quickly the best robe

Gate Post Stone
has been on
my
mind
and i wonder,
when did the leaving begin?
what did his father endure
before handing over sacks of silver?
slouching?
scowling?
shirking?
murderous eyes turned on brother?
secrets harbored in the dark recesses of his heart?
hateful insults hurled toward those who loved him most?
how many times did the servants hear
why don't you just let me leave
before
they watched their master
close the gate?
that prodigal son
has been
on
my
mind
and
it's a kingdom story, really
one i know so well
but
i praise the one who watches
by the gate
and shouts
bring quickly the best robe
when he sees me
still a
long
way
off

  1. Watching by the gate. There are many things to watch for...I think I know what I'll be looking for. Thank you...

  3. Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal hangs over my mantle and I dwell on it often. When did the leaving begin? Have you read Nouwen's book on the painting?

This piece is a wonderful reflection. Thank you, Kendal.

  5. Seeing that I have my very own prodigal, I have had him on my mind quite often as well. I always wonder about the "rest of the story". thank you for sharing this with our community over at Painting Prose...I so much appreciate it, and I'm sure our readers do as well.

  6. The story of the prodigal is amazing but even more amazing to me is the Father's reaction... Love this!

  10. Being a mother of a prodigal is indeed a faith walk, a waiting by the gate faith. I love this, more than you know:)
