an african child suffering jiggers (photo credit) |
(twenty-six of us)
and i counted our shoes
ninety-eight pairs
strewn carelessly about the
living rooms
and
landings
and
bedrooms
but this child pictured?
not one
to protect him from
jiggers
and
infections
and
pain
and
this wrecks me
but
remedy arose in sole hope
and we found ourselves gathered round
empty supper table
cutting shoes
that ugandan seamstresses
will assemble
for
the
children
and this is hope alive

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic, practical idea! Giving a hand-out is one thing but teaching a skill, and providing materials for production has longevity. This is an awesome initiative.
