with cameras and chairs in hand

they enter,
the grandparents,
and
before paying
before choosing a seat
before anything
they scan for the child
cheerleader in the stand
drummer at his snare
dancer in the wings
player on the court
goalie in the goal
whether
on bench
or floor
or sidelines
or field
the smile is the same
and
the love that drove them through the rain
the love that paid the ten dollar admission
the love that helped the arthritic knees manage the stairs
that love is
genuine
and
unconditional
and
swells
my
heart

  6. Grandparents really are the best. It's such a blessing to stand back and watch the girls' grandparents love on them.

I've been mentoring a teenager with a really rocky home life. The other day, she told me that she never had a chance to know her grandparents, because of strained relationships with her mother. She doesn't even know their names.

    Can you imagine? :(

It made me appreciate, even more, the blessing of multi-generational love.

(So glad you linked up today... xxoo)

  10. Aw, this makes me miss my parents, both left last year. But it drives me to one day BE that grandparent in the crowd when my turn comes.

  15. My Nanny was unable [physically] to come to my college graduation but insisted I stop by and show her my whole cap & gown attire. She just lit up. She never drove so she missed a lot of things with me growing up but on that day, I could see all those years flooding her as she looked at me. She said it took me a while to get there, but I did it. Gosh, I miss her.

  16. That is beautifully phrased. I'm sending a copy to my parents, who do this every time they visit. Also LOVED the entry where you "choose" Chris over the You-time. Hard to do, but it can be very sweet. I was just thinking how I hate when we have to ride home from church separately... seems counter-intuitive!
