you were standing under the lights
along the fence
at the baseball game last night
wearing a carrhart coat
to keep out the biting cold
you stood behind the other guys
and i wondered what was
on your mind
two years ago
i saw you sitting on your
bed playing video games
not looking up
not wanting to see anything real
it was four days after
your kid brother
sat in my first period,
reading a hardy boys mystery
and it was two days after
he died
you were standing under the lights
along the fence
at the baseball game last night
and i hope you're
looking
up

Beautiful. The teacher in me is aching. The mom in me is hoping. God can lift us out of the deep, can't He? We just buried a beautiful young teen in our town and so many of our youth are looking UP for hope- that in itself is hopeful!
